About University of Bedfordshire
Previously Luton College of Higher Education, with roots dating back to Luton Modern School, founded in 1908, the University of Bedfordshire has been known by its current name since the University of Luton and De Montfort University’s Bedford campus merged in 2006. It is a modern university with a total of six campuses across the counties of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, offering courses in creative arts, sport, science, social sciences, business and a range of other subjects.
Located in the town centre, the university’s Luton campus is home to seven departments, the students’ union and the Postgraduate and Continuing Professional Development Centre. Housing the Physical Education and Sports Science Centre and a number of lecture theatres and specialist labs, the Bedford campus is 20 minutes from Bedford town centre on foot. Situated just north east of Luton, the Butterfield Park campus plays a key part in nursing and midwifery courses. A number of the University of Bedfordshire’s health courses take place at its Buckinghamshire campus in the town of Aylesbury.
Graduates of Bedfordshire university are often rated as having good prospects for work or further study. A large proportion of its research output has been considered of an international standard and quality, and the university operates a total of 11 research institutes.
Sports clubs range from badminton and basketball to squash and swimming, while student societies cover a wide range of interests, causes, religions and cultures.
Alumni include Teardrop Explodes keyboardist and Food Records co-founder David Balfe, and former MP Richard Page.
